When cutting is the right call
Felling is the last resort, but sometimes it is the honest one: trees with advanced decay or split unions that will not hold through the next big southerly, trees planted hard against foundations, driveways or drains, or fast growers that have simply outscaled a suburban section and now steal all light and drop limbs on the neighbours’ side. Cutting back — reducing height or spread while keeping the tree — suits trees that are healthy but too big for their spot. Either way the decision starts with a look at the whole picture: the tree’s condition, what sits within falling distance, where the timber and slash will go, and whether a prune would genuinely do instead. If a prune would do, that is what gets recommended.

Suburban felling is rarely a single dramatic cut. In tight Papanui sections with houses, fences, gardens and power lines close by, trees are typically dismantled in sections — limbs lowered in a controlled way, the trunk cut down in manageable lengths, each piece going exactly where it is meant to.
